Drew Barrymore Shows Solidarity With Striking Hollywood Writers
Drew Barrymore shirked hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards on Sunday, 7 May, but made a promise to host the event next year.
The yearly awards ceremony was expected to be hosted at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California but was cancelled as an in-person gig, for the 48-year-old actress announced on Thursday, 4 May, that she had pulled out of hosting to support the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.
A statement released by Barrymore said: “Everything we celebrate and honour about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me.”
According to reports, MTV decided to cancel the awards show altogether – and replace it with an online ceremony that included pre-recorded acceptances – the following day, as most booked guests and presenters had dropped out in solidarity with WGA.
Despite the “shift in direction”, executive producer of the event, Bruce Gillmer, agreed that Barrymore would return as the show’s host in 2024.
